Schiedel has commenced the construction of a new production plant in Okup Wielki.

To further cope with the strong demands in the Schiedel steel business, the Schiedel Group has decided to build a completely new and efficient steel plant. On the 17th of November 2022 the symbolic first shovel had taken place with the Schiedel Leadership Team.

The area of the entire investment is comparable to the area of seven football fields and amounts to 48,900 m2

This event, important to further strengthen the steel business, was attended by: representing Schiedel Alessandro Cappellini (President Schiedel), Andreas Schlechter (Director Operations), Krystian Kula (AREA CEO East-Central) and Leszek Demciuch (Operations Director). On the side of the general contractor – Adamietz – Wojciech Gerber (Branch Director), Piotr Owsianka (Project Implementation Director) and Damian Łata (Site Manager). The project management, the Gleeds company, was represented by: Paweł Badura (Łódź Branch Director) and Paulina Chałupka (Junior Project Manager).

Alessandro Cappellini, opened the meeting by saying:

”The construction of a new production plant in Poland is the largest investment for the Schiedel Group in over 20 years. It is a breakthrough moment for us, which will help us prepare for the next years of operating on the market.”

The plant in Okup Wielki will produce steel chimney systems for the needs of the entire Schiedel Group throughout Europe. It will be an extremely important plant for the development of the entire Group.

Ultimately, the plant intends to employ about 200 people in the production and another 40 persons in the administrative area. Compared to the current plant in Wiewiórczyn, which produces steel chimneys, the area of the new plant will increase threefold. There will be additional production lines and process automation will be introduced.

Production in the new plant is scheduled to start at the end of 2023.

Schiedel has always tried very hard to improve its ecological footprint with various activities. Since 2019 we have now set a new, consolidated standard with our company-wide “Going Green” initiative, which is unique in the industry.

But even before 2019, we undertook various activities in all areas that should protect and protect our environment. In the “Industry” area, for example, we have drastically reduced the proportion of cement with a new material solution and optimized it in such a way that we were able to save 3600 tons of cement and also reduce our CO2 emissions. In our factories, we have been able to drastically save the energy required by switching to LED lighting. There are further examples in the area of “purchasing and logistics” where we have invested heavily in building insulation and new, energy-efficient machines.

Our new, strategic goals are a lot more ambitious:

Revised UK Building Regulations – Part L: updating boiler systems https://www.schiedel.com/uk/revised-uk-building-regulations-part-l-updating-boiler-systems/ Tue, 06 Sep 2022 12:36:21 +0000 https://www.schiedel.com/uk/?p=18219

Updating boiler systems with a view to Net Zero.

UK Building Regulations for England were recently changed in view to achieving the governments “net zero” target. This now refers to individual buildings and applies to all plans submitted after 15 June 2022,

The relevant section: Part L, involves the updating of boiler systems, in that older oil and coal boilers are to be updated to more efficient natural gas boilers. In most cases non-condensing boilers will not meet the requirements and cannot be installed in new buildings.

The key points are:

  • If the replacement employs a different fuel, it should not produce more CO2 emissions per kWh of heat than the appliance being replaced.
  • The requirement is also for time and temperature controls as a bare minimum of a new heating appliance when installed in an existing building.
  • This also means that flue types suitable for a condensing boiler are required.
  • Flue material needs to be corrosion resistant.
  • As non-condensing equipment is replaced, it will be very unlikely that the existing flue equipment and termination positions can be used with the new condensing replacement.
  • All parts of the system, including pipework and emitters, should be sized to allow the space heating system to operate effectively, and in a manner that meets the heating needs of the building, at a maximum flow temperature of 55°C or lower.
  • Condensate removal will require a suitable drainage point. Also lower level generator rooms (such as basement / cellar) may need pump removal systems.

We can provide drawings and advice if you have non-condensing plant room which needs upgrading. Please get in touch with us regarding the flue system.

Schiedel supply a a modular twin wall insulated flue/chimney system which is corrosion resistant.

The Metaloterm® MF system is a modular twin wall insulated flue/chimney system, made of stainless steel, with a sealing ring.

Metaloterm® MF is a universal flue/chimney system which is suitable for both high and low temperatures, non-condensing and condensing applications with flue gasses in positive and negative pressure.

It can resist a chimney fire. Therefore the system is suited for a wide range of applications such as boilers, stoves and ovens.

The product range also contains a wide variety of silencers. For Passive houses the Metaloterm assortment provides the Iso-block which can be combined with MF. The system can also be used for CHP applications, in this case a special VITON® sealing ring might be necessary.

Due to the proven quality Metaloterm® MF has a 10 year guarantee.

  • Universal chimney/flue system
  • Inner- and outer wall from high quality stainless steel
  • No terminal bridges, uninterrupted insulation from base plate to top stub
  • Stress free thermal expansion

Housing developments reducing the need for gas energy by using wood burning stoves and ceramic flues. https://www.schiedel.com/uk/housing-developments-and-reducing-the-need-for-gas-energy-using-wood-burning-stoves-and-ceramic-flues/ Mon, 08 Aug 2022 10:17:13 +0000 https://www.schiedel.com/uk/?p=18161

Housing developments built with wood burning stoves and ceramic flues.

Wood burning stoves are needed to offset the high energy prices.

With a house building boom due to the lack of housing, plus the combined shock of energy prices – building houses with secondary heating, such as stoves, has returned to the forefront.

Wood-burning stoves are now highly efficient and designed to offset any carbon they release into the atmosphere. Eco-friendly, modern stoves are why Rose Builders decided to add stoves and chimneys to their housing development in Lawford Green. In addition, various houses within the site had the option of adding a wood-burning stove with a built-in chimney.

If you are a house developer / builder, then we have a number of options in order to add a chimney system to a house development - Feel free to get in touch to see how we can help

Solutions with Specflue.

Working alongside our Isokern experts in Poole, Specflue developed specific ceramic flue packages designed for different property types. The ceramic bundles were a solution provided to Rose Builders, UK experts in house building and property development.

Specflue is one of the leading distributors for Schiedel components. They were founded in 1992, specialising in the stocking and UK distribution of Scheidel’s pre-fabricated chimney and flue systems.

Located in Sudbury, Suffolk, with depots in Honiton, Castleford and Stirling, their network of locations allows Specflue to efficiently service most of the UK with their fleet of vehicles.

Schiedel and Specflue worked together to devise various ceramic chimney package options for a two-storey installation. Looking ahead, we can collaborate to formulate ready-made packages with all components for any house style.

Rose Builders found this was an effortless way of adding secondary heating to their house style, with the chimney incorporated as part of the build.

Specflue and Schiedel are a real asset to our new homes, great customer service from both.

Rose Builders

Features of ceramic chimneys.

  • Resistant to temperature change
The liners are durable and tested for soot, fire and condensate resistance. They meet the latest CE standards and Construction Product Regulation (CPR).
  • Cost effective and reduces gas heating bills
Ideal for homes where you require a cost-effective, safe and simple system. Using log-burning stoves reduces the need to heat homes with radiators, therefore less reliance on increasing gas heating bills.
  • Lightweight
Due to advanced manufacturing techniques, we have reduced the liner’s wall thickness to produce the optimal lightweight but highly robust product, which is natural and environmentally friendly.

Other great features of using ceramic liners:

  • Suitable for all fuels – gas, oil, solid, and biomass.
  • Wide range of accessories to suit numerous installations.
  • Suitable for high-temperature and low-temperature applications.
  • Full compliance with the latest CE standards and Construction Products Regulations (CPR).
  • There is no need for a flexible steel liner, as they should only be used to RELINE an existing chimney. Flexible liners should not be used to line a new chimney!

Ecodesign stoves: A safer, cleaner alternative to gas heating.

Modern Ecodesign stoves are the solution for secondary heating, reducing the need for gas and electricity when looking at heating the home.

The Stove Industry Alliance is active in pushing the benefits of using a stove. Their research (backed by scientific evidence) shows that having a stove and chimney has many benefits and ecological features.

  • No adverse health impacts from exposure to the indoor air typically associated with modern, enclosed wood-burning stoves
  • No evidence of the association between indoor wood burning exposure and asthma risk in developed countries.
  • Improved air quality inside the home due to the natural draught created during wood stove operation
  • Other sources of particulate matter in the home, such as cooking, candle and incense burning, can release much higher levels of PM compared to modern, enclosed wood-burning stoves.

More information on this can be found in the Stove Industry Alliance page.

Usage for heating

Stoves are always a focal point for any house and home and are instantly desirable. However, these are not for aesthetic purposes only. People who don’t have a wood burner, automatically assume the purpose if for aesthetics, however, in some cases firing up a stove tends to heat larger rooms far quicker than conventional radiators would.

Take a look at the Schiedel Sirius stove – Showroom list

Ecodesign stoves

Ecodesign is the European-wide programme to lower emissions from stoves. It comes into force in the UK in 2022. SIA Ecodesign Ready stoves have been sold for a number of years now and meet the Ecodesign requirements. The PM emissions limit for Ecodesign is 55% lower than for DEFRA exempt stoves.

Take a look at the Schiedel Sirius stove – Showroom list

Particle emissions reduced by up to 90%

Burning wood produces particulate matter (PM) but the amount produced depends on how the wood is burnt. Independent research conducted by Kiwa Gastec on behalf of the SIA has shown that SIA Ecodesign Ready stoves can reduce particulate emissions by 90% compared to an open fire and 80% compared to an old stove

ePURO OFFICIAL PRESENTATION AND FAQ’S https://www.schiedel.com/uk/epuro-official-presentation-and-faqs/ Thu, 21 Jul 2022 14:55:16 +0000 https://www.schiedel.com/uk/?p=18011

ePURO official presentation & FAQ's with David Wright

We want to say a massive thank you to everyone that attended one of our events covering the brand new ePURO!

Held by our industry expert David Wright, the video below is the final official presentation covering:

  1. The reason for the introduction of the product
  2. The technical elements of the filter
  3. How the filter is set up and attached
  4. How to correctly sweep a chimney that has an ePURO fitted

We hope this presentation is helpful. However, we have added a FAQ section below, thanks to feedback and questions from our event attendees.

ePURO FAQS

Do you need to sweep the horizontal part of the system or just the vertical?

You sweep the vertical part of the system using standard brushes. The horizontal should be checked periodically.

Does it run all the time?

Yes, it uses about the same amount of electricity as an average light bulb. You can get an emergency switch as an additional extra but the only time you would really turn it off is if the chimney is being swept or if the stove will be unused for a long period of time. The only other time it would be switched off would be during a power cut.

Can you use a standard rain cap and bird guard?

Yes you can use a standard ME terminal, which won’t affect the draft in the system.

What is the voltage going through?

15 to 30 kV.

What voltage connection is required?

230V connection

Will the chimney sweep brushes damage the ePURO?

No, the blade of the electrode is made using spring steel, so will deform during sweeping and then spring back into place. A standard sweeping brush will not damage the system, you sweep it the same way you would any other chimney.

How often does it need to be cleaned?

We recommend getting your chimney swept a minimum of twice a year, when burning wood or solid fuel, once at the end of the heating season to remove any build-up of soot and once prior to the start of the heating season to ensure any bird or insect nests have been removed, if required. There is no need to increase the frequency of sweeping where the ePURO has been installed.

What happens if you don’t get it cleaned or often enough?

This will lead to flocculation (clumping) of the particles, which will start to reduce the diameter of the flue, if left unswept. This will reduce draft and prevent the stove from operating efficiently. This will occur in any flue where solid fuel is being burned and the chimney is not being maintained, whether or not the e puro filter is being used.

For further information or to register an interest in future events, please don't hesitate to contact us at marketing.uk@schiedel.com.

Full technical details and features on the ePURO can be found on our dedicated web page, follow the link by clicking here.

The test point allows for draught testing when the product is first installed and subsequently when the appliance is serviced, in-line with HETAS recommendations. These components are available in two nominal lengths, 950mm and 500mm as standard.

The UE/UED product with its air insulation allows for a reduced distance to combustibles on the connecting flue pipe of just 200mm, meaning that the footprint of the appliance in the room is kept to a minimum, gaining space for the householder.
