This App allows the user to enhance their room design and see what log burning stove looks like, as well as calculating the components required. Stoves can easily be installed into existing homes, be it a newly built house on an estate or an existing, older house or even a self-build project. A stove can be installed going through the ceilings of each room and out of the roof, or along the outside and up the building.

The App gives you a choice of four basic stove designs, to give an impression of what a typical design would look like in your home. This amazing App then be used to assist the installer in selecting the parts required following a full site survey, which can then be ordered directly from their chosen distributor of the Schiedel product range.

The recommended specs is for a device running Android 7.0 and up – supported devices

The app is also available for Apple devices running iOS.

The minimum specs for an Apple device are iOS 11 and up (device list – note that this doesn’t list the new iPhone 12s but they will also be supported)

So easy to use. You can generate an augmented reality image in your own home and actually walk around the stove and see how it looks either going up through the ceiling, or through the wall!

Picking a stove style

Select the stove style – You have already got an idea of what you are looking for so this is a guide so you can see what each version would look like in your home. Note. The heights given on these appliances are indicative. If you have already chosen your stove, then please enter the actual height of your chosen model

Enter some initial details

In this screen, you can choose plain or black flue pipes based on your choice of how you want the stove to look in the room with the flue pipe.

You would also need to enter the floor to ceiling height of your room here. This tends to be around 2400mm; however, you can enter the exact measurements if needed.

The flue pipe diameter also needs to be entered. This is based on what type of stove you are looking to get installed. Please check the stove specifications, but if uncertain the diameter is most likely to be 125mm or 150mm.

Type of installation

The app calculates either an internal or external free-standing system for a house or a bungalow. For example, an external one might be needed if you are looking for a stove in the corner of a room next to an outside wall of your home. An internal one can be chosen if, for example, you have no option of running a flue pipe on the outside wall (i.e. if you have a terraced house). The four options are:

  • Internal house
  • Internal bungalow
  • External house
  • External bungalow

Stove connection choice

You can then choose the connection off the top of the stove. Schiedel will always recommend the Double Wall Adjustable because it is a straight pipe which can be easily adjusted for stove cleaning. The other options are a single wall steel pipe connecting to an insulated straight pipe or into a conical adaptor just below the ceiling.

In each case your chosen HETAS installer or we can advise on other options once you have sent in your quote.

Seeing the stove in your room!

This is the exciting part 🙂 What you do on this screen is slowly move the phone around the room area you wish to place the stove. After a moment, you will see dots appearing on the floor and eventually, a circle will appear which defines the area where the stove is to appear. Press the circle when you are happy with the position.

Please note that this needs a clear surface and edges to work properly, so sometimes a blank room may need some reference points for the augmented reality detector to pick up points.

Rotating and looking at the stove

Once the circle is pressed, then you can see the stove! Please ensure you make no rapid movements with the device as this can cause the image to disappear.

This can be rotated, so it faces the correct way, by using your fingers on the touch screen.

You can now walk up to the augmented reality stove from the front and from the sides to see how it looks in the room. A screen shot can be taken using your phones standard screen shot feature.

Once happy with this, click the tick button at the bottom and then click the clipboard button (both at the bottom of the visual).

Measurements required.

To calculate the components required, the user must enter a set of measurements. These can be approximate figures. If the user is not sure about the areas to measure, then they can click the   at the right side and it will bring up a diagram. Please note that approximate figures can be entered.

For an internal installation

  • Room height. This is usually around 2400mm.
  • Height from top of stove to the room ceiling tends to be around 1600mm.
  • The ceiling floor thickness is usually around 225mm to 300mm.
  • Then it is the bedroom (or first floor) height, which can be similar to the downstairs room, so 2400mm.
  • Loft floor thickness is around 225mm to 300mm.
  • Loft floor to middle of roof (apex) height, could be 1400mm.
  • Roof apex to chimney – this could be the approx. distance between the highest point of the roof to where the chimney is going out. Common figures are 600mm – 1000mm, etc. All depends on the positioning of the chimney downstairs.
  • Roof pitch angle (or the slope of the roof) could be around 35 degrees.

For external it’s a little simpler

  • You choose the distance from where the pipe goes into the stove to the wall – this can be around 500mm or 600mm as an example figure.
  • The wall thickness from inside the room to the outside brickwork is normally around 300mm to 400mm.
  • Then you calculate the length from the ground outside of the house to the overhanging eaves (where the guttering is). This would be around 4500mm on a standard 2 storey house or 2400mm on a standard bungalow.
  • Then you measure the overhang from the wall to the end of the eaves (usually around 300mm).

Choosing the terminal

Finally, for both installs, either internal or external, you then choose a terminal type.

Summary screen

Now you will see a summary of your choices – plus a notes box. For example, if you think you need an offset due to an obstruction in the attic, then you could note it here. The quote will generate a parts list, which will then be confirmed following the site survey by the installer, who will provide the final quote for the installation and parts required.

Then you see the will see the estimated price based on the information supplied. These are Schiedel list prices and do not include either the stove, or installation costs, which will be provided by your installer. Schiedel recommend using HETAS registered installers to fit chimneys to solid fuel appliances.

The quote will be emailed to you in a spreadsheet format, so this can easily be sent to any local distributor, or contact us for a more detailed quote if you have any specific changes to the entries in the apps.

What sort of phone can be used?

A modern phone from the last few years should be okay to run the augmented reality part of the Builder. However, the recommended spec is for a device running Android 7.0 and iOS 11. The relevant app stores will advise if this can be installed.

How accurate is this?

Quite accurate. It may bring up extra parts based on the height of the building, but our technical team can always advise if you have any specific installation questions.

The four stoves don't really look like the ones I am after.

These tend to match the different commercially available styles. However, the best thing to do is try and pick the closest to the style you like and enter the correct diameter and stove height – which is important for the calculator to work out the chimney components needed.

Sometimes it doesn't seem to pick up a surface to place the stove.

Sometimes a blank area is far more difficult for the system to pick up. The AR tool looks for common areas and edges and uses those as reference points. Try and move back and forth, or even different angles and it should be able to pick up something.

Some of the pipes seem narrower than the one specified.

The visual side is an approximate. Sizes and lengths may look different from your chosen figures, but this just gives a visual guide.

I don't understand some of the measurements.

I'm not sure about the accuracy of my measurements.

Don’t worry. Enter the approximate values and we can calculate the components. Our technical team can verify if the set of components are accurate for the installation. The pipe lengths are different.

This is because a join cannot go through a ceiling or a wall. However, this can be assessed when on site or can be discussed with our technical team.

If you have an installation which is different to the standard ones, then fill in the details for the closest installation type and put information in the notes section for our technical team to look at.

Choosing a stove

Modern stoves are very energy efficient. When choosing a stove ensure the following are met.

clearSkies certification

clearSkies certified appliances meet the minimum performance level for Ecodesign (which is the minimum legal requirement for an appliance manufactured in the UK from 1st January 2022). These new Ecodesign Regulations represent a significant tightening of criteria over the current CE requirements and specify the minimum energy efficiency of the appliance and the maximum levels of emissions permitted which are:

  • CO – Carbon Dioxide
  • PM – Particulate Matter
  • OGC – Organic Gaseous Compounds
  • NOx – Nitrogen Oxide

What is “DEFRA Exempt” or “DEFRA Approved” ?

DEFRA (Department of Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs) have strict guidelines on emissions. If a stove or appliance passes these emission level restrictions, then they appear on the official website as “appliances that meet specific criteria”.
