FLUES

FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Reliable heat

Since the dawn of time people living in the colder areas of our planet have needed a heat source in their living spaces. How can houses and apartments be heated both today and, in the future, safely, reliably and as efficiently as possible, without harming health and the environment?

In addition to selecting suitable energy sources, a key factor for reliable heat and good interior air quality is installing modern heating systems and controlled living space ventilation. Selecting the correct flue is a vital part of this complex interaction, since it essentially provides the infrastructure for independent heating and permits a large choice in the range of heating system options.

Warmth icon

As the only element which penetrates the building vertically, it is subjected to immense thermal and chemical stresses on a daily basis. At the same time, the strict requirements for the components of a modern building must also be fulfilled. Experience shows: In terms of stress-resistance, safety and sustainability, ceramic is the optimum material for flues.

CERAMIC – NATURAL CLAY PRODUCT

Ceramic household objects were already in use 10,000 years ago. Their main constituent is clay, in contrast to porcelain, which typically consists of kaolin, feldspar and quartz. Geologically speaking, clay (as well as Kaolin) resulted from the weathering of primary rocks containing feldspar. Very fine-grained, water-containing clay minerals were left behind.

The good formability of the mass and the drying and firing behaviour quickly resulted in clay becoming the preferred material for roof tiles, flower pots and crockery.

UNBEATABLE TALENTS

Its truly unique combination of special properties still makes the oldest material of the human age the perfect material for modern technical applications: Ceramic is heat resistant to well over 1000°C and therefore ideal for heating elements. It has impressive electrical insulation as well as a very high resistance to wear, heat, pressure and chemical influences from gases and liquids. Ceramic is also highly scratch-resistant.

VERSATILE PERFORMANCE

These days you will find ceramics in many areas as an absolute top-performance material. Not only the spark plugs in a car and the insulators on high-voltage masts are made of ceramics. Heat shields for space travel must also fulfil many requirements, in particular resistance to extreme temperatures and also good thermal insulation; furthermore they must be light. They are manufactured in ceramic composite materials with a very low density. Ceramic tooth inlays and artificial hip joints provide many people with an improved quality of life.

Header line HEALTHY LIVING

“BAD ATMOSPHERE”

Modern city-dwellers breathe their average of 20,000 breaths per day not in “fresh air”, but in enclosed spaces. They spend 80-90% of their life here. The problem: To save energy, our buildings are becoming more and more airtight. This means that pollutants can accumulate within the interior spaces, especially since only approximately 28% of residents ventilate sufficiently in the winter.

There is evidence that unhealthy room air can increase the risk of illnesses of the respiratory tract. Since one third of all Europeans already suffer from asthma and allergies, it is even more important that construction materials, walls, floors or even furniture do not become a source of pollutants or volatile emissions.

POLLUTANT-TESTED CONSTRUCTION

Pollutants in interior spaces cannot be seen, but they can be measured. A sensitive selection of construction materials influences the health quality of the interior air. It can be designed technically, and implemented at a reasonable financial cost. This includes a flue, which does not release emissions into its environment.

FLUE BASICS

Flues don’t have an easy life. They must fulfil today’s requirements as well as future requirements. In order to ensure long-term operational safety, they must be suitable for all fuels. It is also essential that they are acid-resistant, refractory as well as insensitive to moisture, and as an option also have a separate combustion air supply.

Keramikrohre Made By Schiedel

After a soot fire of 1000°C no cracks appear, the pipe remains exhaust gas-tight. Further advantages - it is insensitive to moisture and corrosion-proof against acids from all fuels.
Systems not tested by W3G!
At temperatures above 400°C, cracks appear and the pipe is no longer gas-tight. Condensate can leak out.

RAW MATERIAL KNOW-HOW

The basic requirements for isostatic pressing of our thin-walled profile tubes is created by a special pressing granulate in spherical shaped single granules. It is impressive across the whole line: optimum pourability, flow behaviour and pressing properties.

The Schiedel Rapid joint sealant is also unique in the market, a single-component system, which can resist temperatures from 20°C up to well over 1000°C.

DOUBLE QUALITY

At Schiedel, quality runs on twin tracks. On the one hand, there are testing procedures, required by the CE certification, and on the other hand testing procedures to ensure we meet our own standards. These are measurement and monitoring methods which we have developed and introduced ourselves for our own processes.

To measure the capillary and diffuse resistance of our pipes, an ultrasonic test procedure for continuous production was developed and introduced. This method is used in other sectors to identify defects.

Absolut Schiedel

THE ENERGY-SAVING FLUE

High performance rebated ceramic flue liners and accessories

In order to meet the new European Standards for Chimney products, Schiedel has sourced the finest raw materials, blended in a unique formula to give a unique combination of temperature resistance and strength.

Schiedel have invested in the latest production technology and are proud to introduce a full range of high performance rebated ceramic flue liners and accessories, which are fully CE tested and CPR approved.

Modular 3 layer insulated chimney system

Traditionally, chimneys are completely constructed on site with separate components sourced from a number of suppliers and most likely from a variation of manufacturers. By contrast the Schiedel Swift System offers modular, prefabricated units to speed construction and facilitate consistent quality standards.

Providing an alternative to underground ducting

Schiedel Swift Air provides all the benefits of the Schiedel Swift but in addition, neatly and simply delivers combustion air to the heating appliance. Ideally suited to energy efficient buildings, the Schiedel Air System provides an alternative to underground ducting, eliminating the risk of ‘wind’ effect’ influences on the draft of the chimney.

Header line ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Sustainable thinking and acting is not something that Schiedel just pays lip service to, but is inextricably linked to our values. It forms the basis of our environmental success. As the undisputed number 1 in the development of highly efficient flue and chimney systems in ceramics, we have a role as a pioneer and role model. We want to be the most sustainable manufacturer of flue systems. Our objective is to continuously improve our environmental footprint, by working on the efficient use of resources, products, materials and processes.

This is why we concentrate our research and development on low-emissions, resource-conserving and energy-efficient solutions and production processes. For quite some time we have been working actively together with international experts, to create products, which meet the highest technical demands.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

The Vienna “Denkstatt – sustainable thinking” institute has compared the CO2 footprint of the Schiedel SIH system with traditional clinker brick chimneys. When doing so both of the Schiedel solutions came out on top.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The European Commission is aligning the economy of the future with the new “Circular Economy Action Plan”, which will increasingly replace the old linear model of “produce, use, dispose of”.

Schiedel is supporting this change through innovative production processes and sustainable products. Here, the physical-chemical transformation of clay into ceramics enables a virtually 100% closed cycle.

BETTER USAGE

With the topic of resource utilisation it is not only about using less, but also using resources better.

Thanks to their “infinite” service life, our ceramic pipes are unparalleled in terms of longevity. They consist of the same components as the Earth’s crust: 60% silica and 30% alumina. The remaining iron oxides are then added to this.

These raw materials have an almost unlimited availability. 100% of the auxiliary production materials used are recycled back into the production process. Waste products from associated ceramic production is also used as a valuable raw material component – a significant contribution to the protection of our primary raw material resources.

Header line PATHS TO THE FUTURE

Naturally the further consistent optimisation of the CO2 footprint as well as cost reduction will continue to be right at the top of our agenda for the coming years.

Currently we are working together with selected partners on innovative filter solutions to reduce up to 95% of the fine dust particle load from fireplaces. We want to be able to offer these soon in multiple countries.

One of the most exciting and currently still most visionary topics in research and development is the search for alternative, renewable materials for our products. Materials which may possibly be thermally treated within a subsequent firing process at above 700°C into harder, more durable objects.
