Engineering for Emergency Power in Datacenter Geleen

As part of this project, Schiedel designed custom planning for a major telecom provider in the Netherlands to integrate a new emergency power generator with noise attenuation into a building with limited space. The client, one of the largest telecom and data providers, opted for a more powerful generator. Schiedel solved the dual challenge of lack of space and strict noise standards with smart engineering and acoustic measures.

Challenge

Replacing the aging emergency generator at the data center in Geleen presented the Schiedel Center Of Engineering (COE) with a double engineering challenge. The new generator was more powerful and thus required significantly larger exhaust and appropriate sound pressure reduction systems. The first challenge lay in the limited space where the new emergency generator was placed. The larger exhaust and noise reduction had to fit seamlessly into the technical space in the existing building. A second requirement was that the increased capacity of the generator should cause absolutely no additional noise pollution for the nearby residential area.

Solution

Schiedel COE designed a solution that cleverly integrated the necessary sound attenuations the exhaust into the building. First, a primary silencer was installed directly in the technical room to reduce the initial engine noise. Next, a powerful secondary silencer was fully integrated into the vertical exhaust along the façade. By incorporating the muffler vertically, valuable installation space within the old building was saved while maintaining optimal sound pressure reduction performance. Thanks to Schiedel's precise custom engineering, the provider's data center is now guaranteed a new emergency power supply installation with reliable performance, essential for the continuity of its telecom services. An important result is the harmony with the environment: even with a more powerful emergency power generator, strict noise standards are met and no noise pollution is caused to the nearby residential area.

The Customer

The client is one of the largest telecom and data providers in the Netherlands, replaced the existing emergency power generator at its data center in Geleen with a much more powerful model in mid-2024. The increase in power capacity provides the client with sufficient security against power outages necessary to stabilize the grid during congestion.
