The scope involved a comprehensive exhaust and chimney installation for Darlington Memorial Hospital's new energy center. This facility houses three Cummins Generators, two Byworth Steam Boilers, and a Byworth LPHW Boiler, with future capacity for a CHP unit. Schiedel was commissioned to supply and install all exhaust systems, including a massive 40-meter-high free-standing multicore chimney.
Challenge
The project faced two primary hurdles: longevity and environmental impact. The system required a certified 30-year working life to ensure the hospital's operational stability for decades. More critically, the site's proximity to residential housing made noise pollution a major concern. Every component had to meet strict acoustic standards to minimize the impact of industrial plant noise on the local community.
Solution
Schiedel engineered a robust, long-life solution featuring integrated silencers within the flue runs to drastically reduce noise levels at the source. The 40-meter multicore chimney was designed to house multiple exhausts within a single structure, optimizing space and performance. Combined with an acoustically insulated plant room, this approach met all environmental goals while securing the hospital’s heating future.
The Customer
The County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, supported by a high-caliber project team including Crown House Technologies and Dewjoc Architects, spearheaded this major infrastructure upgrade. Their goal was to modernize the hospital’s primary heating services to create a state-of-the-art energy center, directly supporting the Trust’s long-term sustainability initiatives.
